The Wisdom of the Whole: Coaching for Joy, Health
and Success by Linda Bark PhD

    Friday, March 29, 2019

    10:30 am - 12:00 Noon

Join us for our 2019 Book Club starting at a new time.

“The Wisdom of the Whole: Coaching for Joy Health and Success” offers multidimensional and holistic/integral coaching tools for helping clients along their personal journeys.

The book merges scholarly theoretical and practical information to provide a tool kit for customizing the use of coaching in one’s practice and also personal life. The integrated framework of the model incorporates powerful tools such as prioritizing storytelling imagery and the use of affirmations to enable people to travel forward on a path to their wellness goals. Finding out how sense of purpose can impact motivation or shape an aspiration is also part of the model. It provides ways for coaches and clients to employ intuition and the more subtle aspects of being present to move quickly and easily toward their goals with greater authenticity often eliminating false starts or wrong turns.

Raleigh CEC: Acknowledgment vs. Encouragement -
    When to Use Them
    Thursday, April 4, 2019

    4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

How and when you use acknowledgment and encouragement can have an important impact on coaching your organizational and private clients. So, whether you are in a rah-rah session to recognize and uplift your clients or in a tough conversation to highlight the blind spots—what gets talked about and how it gets talked about can determine the success of the outcome.

One can similarly express acknowledgment and encouragement, however, they are different. Most likely this can be in a strategically significant way. Encouragement is primarily focused on future whereas acknowledgment is mostly past-oriented.

In this Cutting Edge Conversation, we will explore:

    • How does earning acknowledgment and encouragement make big differences behaviorally, motivationally, sociologically, economically and morally?
    • What impacts do both earned and non-earned acknowledgment have?
    • What impacts do both earned and non-earned encouragement have?

Movies that Matter - FINDING JOE

Join us for an inspiring film, “Finding Joe,” that takes us on the hero’s journey, followed by an interactive discussion.

    Friday, April 12, 2019
    1:00 - 3:30 pm

In the early 20th century, while studying world mythology, Joseph Campbell discovered a pattern hidden in every story ever told and he called it “the hero’s journey.” A truly inspirational film, Finding Joe takes us on the ultimate hero’s journey: the journey of self-discovery. As you slay dragons and uncover treasures, you just may find that the holy grail you seek is closer than you think.

Filmmaker Pat Solomon has been influenced by Joseph Campbell’s work at every major turning point in his life, including his decision to become a director. He attributes his own good fortune to the concepts and ideas that he discovered in Joseph Campbell’s books. “The Hero with a Thousand Faces put me on a path years ago that led me here, to my present film, Finding Joe.”

This is not entirely a biography of Joe Campbell. It is an exploration of what all stories tell us about what it means to be human. The film will dive deep into what Campbell calls “The Hero’s Journey.” What is it, and most importantly, what does it mean for me? It is a contemporary look at mythology and the lessons we can learn from stories: both ancient and modern.

Featuring: Deepak Chopra, Mick Fleetwood, Rashida Jones, Tony Hawk, Catherine Hardwicke, Laird Hamilton, Robert Walter, Akiva Goldsman, Sir Ken Robinson, Robin Sharma, Lynne Kaufman, Alan Cohen, Brian Johnson, Joseph Marshall III, Rebecca Armstrong, Chungliang Al Huang, David L. Miller, Gay Hendricks, David Loy and Norman Ollestad.

Come grab a bag of popcorn and a box of candy; sit down with coaching friends along with new acquaintances to watch and discuss, Finding Joe.

    WORKSHOP:
Managing Transitions in the Coaching Conversation

    Thursday, April 18, 2019
    1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

We go through a number of transitions during the course of a coaching conversation; how we manage these transitions can have a powerful effect on outcomes for the client.

Our goal for this workshop is to identify points where transitions occur in coaching and explore the most effective ways they can be handled. We will examine the ICF Core Competencies and how they can: (1) inform transitions that are an integral part of the coaching process, and (2) provide a context for recognizing transitions that arise spontaneously in the course of the conversation.  We will identify at least four transitions; explore how to recognize them, and discover how we can use the competencies to manage them.

Participants will come away with an enhanced understanding of:

    • The different functional properties of ICF Core Competencies.
    • How the five process competencies can inform awareness of transitions inherent in the structure of coaching conversations.
    • The subtler transitions - times when we are not sure where to go next with the client.
    • How to manage these transitions so the client keeps moving forward towards meaningful outcomes.

In addition, we will draw on the wisdom of the group to enrich and expand our understanding of these transitions and their management.

Durham CEC:  Chemistry and Fit - How to Know When It's There and When It's Not
    Thursday, April 25, 2019

    4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

In the hustle of building your coaching business, have you ever overlooked the “Chemistry or Fit” between you and the client?  Maybe signed up a client knowing the match wasn’t quite right? Learn why it’s important to determine beforehand, if we will have the right chemistry with our clients. Plus, how to know if it’s a good match for building a strong coaching relationship.

Conversely, what if at the outset all was great, then over time the chemistry fades and the fit is no longer working. What can we do to reignite it when it gets lost along the way? Or if it can’t be revived, we will discuss the steps needed to graciously bow out of the coaching engagement.

In this CEC, we will discuss:

    • Chemistry and fit - how to know when it is there and when it is not
    • Share stories of how we have overcome this situation
    • Why we chose to stay and struggled through it
    • How to let go with grace and move on

Come prepared to share your successes and strategies in managing the “relationship of coaching.”
