Higher Education SIG cohort 2

The ICF-RAC Higher Education Coaches Special Interest Group (HEC-SIG) Cohort 2 focuses on achieving these outcomes: 

  • Create communities to support coaching in higher education, 
  • Share promising practices, lessons learned, suggestions for future directions, 
  • Familiarize coaches with needs of undergrads, grads, & faculty/admin populations, 
  • Build Institutional/organizational capacity through campus leaders and policy-makers, 
  • Build evidence for and evaluating the effectiveness of coaching in higher ed,   
  • Create more visibility and recognition.

    ICF Raleigh Higher Education Coaches Special Interest Group (HEC-SIG) Cohort 2 is now open for registration!

    The group focuses on achieving these outcomes:

    HEC-SIG Cycle 2 will kick off in May 2021!

    Dates and sessions for HEC-SIG Cohort 2:

    All meetings will be held virtually (with the exception of the capstone celebratory gala event which is planned for early 2022).  Fourth Thursdays @ 8 am-10 am

    May 27: Tools to start an ethical effective coaching relationship with clients in academia (2 CCEUs, Core Competencies #1,2,3)

    June 24:  Supporting university populations with cultivating safety and trust (2 CCEUs, Core Competencies #4)

    July 22:  Setting an agenda for a successful coaching engagement : maintaining presence with clients in academia (2 CCEUs, Core Competency #5)

    August 26:  Leading with curiosity and listening actively as a coach in a Higher Ed environment (2 CCEUs, Core Competency #6)

    September 23:  Developing clarity by evoking new perceptions of thoughts, behaviors, and action in academia (2 CCEUs, Core Competency #7)

    October 28:  Supporting goal-directed forward movement in Higher Ed coaching practice (2 CCEUs, Core Competency #8)

    Celebratory Gala: TBD

    Register today for all 6 HEC-SIG sessions!  You’ll earn a certificate of completion and digital badge, gain an opportunity to collaboratively publish and attend a gala dinner including you and a guest from your campus/organizational leadership.

           ICF-RAC Members and Affiliates: $60 early bird special till  May 14, $80 after May 14

           Partners and ICF Global Members*: $70 early bird special till May 14, $90 after May 14

           Guests/Non-Members: $80 early bird special till May 14, $100 after May 14

    ABOUT THE FACILITATORS: 

    Rebekah Layton, PhD, CMC, PCC, is the Director of Professional Development Programs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Rebekah provides individual career coaching and leadership mentoring for trainees, and is a Certified Mentor Coach (CMC) and Professional Certified Coach (PCC). She is a published author on professional development and career outcomes, a contributor to Inside HigherEd Carpe Careers, and a member of the Graduate Career Consortium where she currently serves as the Southeast Regional Director. Rebekah designs, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive professional and career development program housed in the Office of Graduate Education supporting biomedical graduate students and postdoctoral trainees. Her expertise in personality and social psychology includes the study of self-regulation and goal-setting. Rebekah firmly believes that exciting career options await each trainee, and she helps individuals to identify and capitalize on their strengths to prepare for the next steps that are right for them to launch them toward career success.

    Maryam Mohaghegh, MSc, is the Founder of Coaches in Academia, an online community of coaches in Higher Education. Maryam is a Lecturer of Persian Language and Culture at North Carolina State University where she serves as the ICF Academic Liaison, a member of the Board for Student Success and Program Coordinator for Asian Language Concentration. Maryam developed expertise as a scientist in molecular biology and virology, before turning her energies toward languages and teaching. Most recently, she has blended her passion for helping students learn and grow through teaching in the academy, with her passion for serving the whole person through coaching. She is a trained graduate of the Business Coach Institute in Raleigh and now brings her coaching skills to support students and faculty. Maryam believes coaching as a required element of higher education as they attempt in defining and designing their future path and works to bring it forward.

    Peter Vincent, MS, is a Leadership Coach and Human Resources Consultant based in Winston Salem, N.C. and New York City.   After a lengthy career in Human Resources, having held senior HR positions at Sony, Time Inc/Time Warner and the National Audubon Society,  Peter trained as a coach at Georgetown University, an ICF recognized program. He has extensive experience coaching leaders in the for profit, non-profit, religious and academic environments,  and brings expertise, humor, and focus to his work.  Peter is an internationalist, having lived in, worked and traveled to  30+ countries, can communicate (sometimes well, occasionally poorly) in 5 languages, and of late, has particularly enjoyed bringing the value of coaching to graduate and international students.

    Shirley Rijkse, MBA, SHRM-SCP, is the Human Resources Lead Instructor for the Business Technologies Department at Central Carolina Community College.  Advising for academic studies in Business and HR, using a coaching style. She is also the advisor for HR Student Chapter and Toastmasters, and one of the advisors to Phi Beta Lambda student organization. Shirley serves on the North Carolina SHRM State Council as the 2021 Director-Elect; and serves on various workforce committees and community resource organization boards. Shirley is trained with Choose to Win Coaching from Ziglar. She holds many certifications to enhance her proficiencies. Her many years of leadership and training were developed through experiences in human resources, business management & ownership, senior retirement/assisted living administration, vocational rehabilitation, medical/dental office management, and cosmetology.  Shirley brings an enthusiastic passion for education and helping others create their own success stories through personal empowerment coaching.
